FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the NM Creations. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about using, cutting, sewing, and customizing our flexible 3D dragon scale material sheets.
Product Overview & Material Properties
- What are your dragon scale material sheets made of?
- Our sheets feature realistic, 3D injection-molded polymer scales that are permanently anchored to a durable, highly flexible backing layer. This unique design delivers the striking visual weight and depth of authentic scale mail armor without the rigidity, noise, or crushing weight of metal rings.
- Are these sheets 3D printed?
- No. Our sheets are manufactured using custom industrial injection molding, which offers a massive upgrade over traditional 3D printed scales on fabric. Unlike brittle 3D prints (like PLA plastic) that can crack along layer lines or delaminate from mesh backings under stress, our high-impact polymer material is engineered to bend, flex, and bounce back safely during intense wear.
- What are the dimensions of a single scale sheet?
- Each standard sheet features an active scale coverage area of 10.0 x 10.0 inches (25.4 x 25.4 cm). Additionally, every sheet includes a generous 1.0-inch raw border entirely around the scale perimeter, making the total sheet footprint 12.0 x 12.0 inches (30.5 x 30.5 cm).
Working with the Material (For DIY Crafters)
- Can you sew this dragon scale fabric with a regular sewing machine?
- Yes. Every sheet is built for easy sewing and fastening. You can run your sewing machine directly through the 1-inch raw mesh border to attach the panel to your project. Because our material is highly pliable, you can also sew directly through the scale layers using a heavy-duty or denim machine needle, heavy-duty thread, and stitching through the flexible backing gaps between the individual scale rows.
- How do I cut the scale sheets to fit my armor patterns?
- You can easily cut our flexible panels using standard heavy-duty crafting shears or a sharp utility knife. Because our material does not split or shatter like brittle 3D prints, you can cut cleanly along the backing gaps between the rows of scales to customize the sheet to fit your exact cosplay template without damaging the individual plates.
- What is the best glue or adhesive to use?
- For bonding our dragon scale sheets directly to EVA foam, heavy leather bases, or rigid costume plastics, we highly recommend high-quality flexible contact cement (such as Barge), specialized heavy-duty fabric adhesives, or industrial-grade hot glue. Ensure the backing layer is clean and free of dust before applying your adhesive.
Customization & Durability
- Can I paint, airbrush, or weather these scales?
- Absolutely. The high-relief 3D polymer surface acts as an excellent base for custom detailing. Our material accepts standard acrylic paints, miniature model paints, metallic waxes (such as Rub 'n Buff), and dark weathering washes perfectly. We highly recommend applying a flexible, clear-coat acrylic sealer over your final paint job to lock in your design and prevent cracking when the material flexes.
- Is this material durable enough for active LARP combat and conventions?
- Yes. Our material is engineered specifically for active creators, LARPers, and performers. It is lightweight, completely weather-resistant, and structural. It will safely withstand the physical demands of weekend-long conventions, intense stage combat, and live-action roleplay games without cracking or breaking upon impact.
- Where are your products made?
- Every single dragon scale material sheet is proudly designed, molded, and crafted at our independent facility in Wisconsin, USA.
